“IN SUNLIGHT OR IN SHADOW”
Edited by Lawrence Block
Pegasus Books, 278 pages, 2016
Some day it might be interesting for an editor to assemble a collection of short stories and ask talented painters to illustrate them. No? Well, in “IN SUNLIGHT OR IN SHADOW: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper,” Lawrence Block has chosen 17 paintings by the artist and gotten a group of talented writers to use them as inspiration for writing.
Block selected works by Hopper, the outstanding American narrative artist, and persuaded writers that include Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, and Michael Connelly to create fiction illustrating them.
The stories span genres and are preceded by a copy of the painting that inspired them.

Nebula Awards Showcase 2016
Edited by Mercedes Lackey
412 pages Prometheus Books $18
Want to find out where sci-fi and fantasy writing is headed? Then get a copy of Nebula Awards Showcase 2016. This annual collection of the best writing in the field contains more than a dozen prize-winning stories, novelettes, novellas, and selections from novels.
All were chosen by members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from work published in (oops) 2004. Okay, there’s a time lag.
The stories offer a variety of imaginative looks at different worlds, cultures, and predictions of the future.
Splendid Catastrophe by Angela Howe Decker
I bought this book in July 2015 while attending the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. I don’t read a lot of poetry, but the book cover and the few lines I skimmed inside the book caught my attention. Needless to say, I enjoyed this chapbook so much that I went to the trouble of adding it to Goodreads so I could give it 4 stars. The poems are beautiful snapshots of family, love, death, and what it means to be a woman. “Picnic” is about facing the death of a friend by living; “Mistakes” is about wanting to be the perfect mother but knowing being an honest one will teach your children more. This is a chapbook I will visit again and again.

Revelation Illustrated by Jan Small
Love this book as a supplement to reading Revelations. The pictures gave such wonderful imagery to help me see from someone else’s perspective the events of the future. I loved reading the personal testimonies and the spirit-led painting of the pictures. It shows the dynamic relationship we can have with God and the paintings itself is full of that life.

Don’t Eat the Flowers by Doris Nikolaidis
What a wonderful book of short stories. Loved reading about her childhood in Germany and her experiences that brought her to San Francisco. This book will make you laugh and cry. Kudos to the author for writing such a beautiful book of her life experiences.
