Carey Receives London Award

Joyce Krieg, secretary of the California Writers Club, presents the Jack London Award to Art Carey at the July 26 CWC Honorary Luncheon in Oakland. Established in 1973, the awards recognize outstanding service and dedication “above and beyond” to the organization. The coveted awards are presented every two years to one member of each CWC branch nominated by their branch peers. A full account of the awards and photos is available on the CWC website, http://calwriters.org.

Carey, who serves as FAW publicity chairperson and website coordinator, is a charter member of Fremont Area Writers. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and UCLA.

A former newspaper reporter and editor, he is the author of a novel, “The Gender War.” His short stories and humor pieces have appeared in dozens of electronic and print publications.

CWC Ina Coolbrith Award Presented to Bob Garfinkle

Bob Award

California Writers Club President Dave George and Nancy Curteman presented the club’s Ina Coolbrith Award to FAW’s Bob Garfinkle at the July 2014 Central Board Meeting.

Bob is a lifetime member of California Writers Club. He’s dedicated a tremendous amount of his time and talent to CWC and certainly has met the standards for the Ina Coolbrith award.
Like California poet Ina Coolbrith, who encouraged new writers through her literary salon, Bob encourages new writers at club meetings.

Like Ina Coolbrith, who was President of the Congress of Authors and Journalists, Bob was a founder of Fremont Area Writers and president of FAW and CWC. He is currently FAW’s membership chair.

Like Ina Coolbrith, who was a celebrated poet and author, Bob is an internationally known author of astronomy books and scientific journal articles.

Like Ina Coolbrith, who was active in her community as an Oakland librarian, Bob was active as a Union City Council member.

Like Ina Coolbrith, Bob has demonstrated his love of writing through his active support of CWC. Here are a few of his achievements:

  • Central Board Rep for South Bay from 2003-2007.
  • During his Presidency of CWC, he led the lawsuit against Scott Sonders Coalition, and unsnarled the 501C tax tangle.
  • He started the Annual CWC picnic and has chaired it every year from 2009 to the present.
    • He was on the staff of South Bay Writers’ East of Eden Writer Conference from 2004 to 2008. It was one of the best writers conferences in California.

When asked why he dedicated so much of his busy life to CWC, his response was to the point. “I enjoy the camaraderie of working with other writers. I guess I just like writers.”

One more special note: Springer Publishing will release Bob’s chef d’oeuvre on astronomy, Luna Cognita, (Known Moon). This will be Bob’s third astronomy book.

Ina Coolbrith would be proud of Bob Garfinkle and so are we.
